September 23-27

Our poem this week was "Apples". We made movements to our poem, completed some word sorts, and completed a poetry page.

For word work, we sorted J or G, E or J, O or E, and Q or O.

Our big book was "The Dog Park". We really liked this book because the main character was a cute puppy who was playing at the dog park and made new friends!

For writing, we worked on a Jaguar for J, Elephant for E, Owl for O, Quail for Q, and Fox for F.

Our new word wall words this week were "and" and "like".

For guidance, we talked about following directions.

Our read aloud was "Chrysanthemum". We practiced predicting, retelling, comparing and contrasting, making inferences, telling our favorite part, and answering comprehension questions.

For math, we introduced two new work places. The students are practicing writing numbers at both work places. We also starting talking about ABAB, AABAAB, and ABC patterns.

Elsa was our special person this week! We enjoyed getting to know Elsa more.

Stuffy Day

The students got BINGO!

On Monday, September 30, the students are allowed to bring a small stuffed animal to school!

3rd Grade Buddies

We met our 3rd grade buddies the other day! We enjoyed some nice weather and listen to some fun stories!

Book Bags

Book Bags are also starting this week! Sometime this week, your child will be bringing home their own book bag. Inside this book bag is a letter, some helpful notes on reading with your child, and two reading books.

I ask that you hold on to the same books for a couple of days. Read them many times, look for sight words or word wall words, retell the important events, and ask your child comprehension questions.

When you feel that they are ready for new books, send the book bag back with the two books and your child will pick two new books!

Right now, I am sending home leveled books based on how many letter sounds your child knows. If at any point you feel the books are too easy or too hard for child, please let me know!

Sight Word Lists

Here is our classroom word wall.

This wall will contain 57 words that do not follow any certain spelling pattern or words that Kindergartners often use in their writing and reading. They are words that the Kindergartners will be tested on each quarter.

Each week, I will add two new words to our word wall. We will talk about the words and practice using them in sentences.

Along with in class lessons, we also will be sending home sight words lists. Everyone will get sight word list 1 this week. I ask that you practice the list of words with your student. Practice reading them, making them, writing them, mixing them up and reading them, or make flash cards! Anything to help your child learn those words.

When you feel confident that your child can recognize those words, cut the list in half, sign one half, and send it back to school. I will test your child on that list and send a new one home!

Thank you for your continued help at home!

September 16-20

Our poem this week was "Family". We made movements to our poem, completed sorts, and worked on a poetry page.

For word work, we looked at C or I, A or C, A or D, and D or G.

Our big book was "Molly's Leash".

For writing, we wrote cat for C, apple for A, Dog for D, Giraffe for G, and worked in our Kindergarten portfolios.

For guidance, we worked on focusing attention.

For read aloud, we read "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse". We worked on predicting, retelling, studying our main character, making inferences, telling our favorite part, and answering comprehension questions.

For math, we worked on five-frames and ten-frames. The students are practicing one to one correspondence, subitizing, and matching numbers.

For handwriting, we practiced letter D and P.

Library & Math Homework

We have library tomorrow!
Please make sure library books come back!

A math home connection is coming home today! You are not required to do this with your child but they do align with our curriculum and give your child extra practice!

Homework

I am sending home another math worksheet and a guidance worksheet.

You are not required to do these with your child but if you do, they can bring it back for a sticker!

Please make sure your child writes their name! I got a lot of no-name worksheets last time.

"The first thing we do is always the same, we write our name!"

Puzzles and Games Center

We are starting our puzzles and games center this week. This is a center that students visit once per week where they can build puzzles or play games.

I am looking for parent volunteers to come in from 9:40-10:40 to help teach the basic rules of playing some of our games.

We have "Candy Land", "Chutes and Ladders", "Guess Who", and "Connect Four".

Please email me if you are available to come and teach our students how to play these games!

September 9-13

Our poem this week was "Sticky Situation". We made movements to our poem, completed some word sorts, and completed a poetry page.

For word work, we sorted N or H, M or N, R or M, L or R, and I or L.

Our big book was "City ABC's". This book was about students finding things in the city that start with each letter of the alphabet.

For writing, we drew a nail, a monkey, a rhino, a lion, and an iguana. These match with our word work for each day and the students practice following directions, writing uppercase letters (beginning sounds), and copying of the word.

We started phonics this week! We have been busy looking at rhymes, beginning sounds, ending sounds, putting sounds together, and taking sounds apart. This will help your child be a great reader and writer.

Our read aloud was "Recess Queen". We practiced making predictions, retelling important events, studying our main character, making inferences, telling our favorite part, and answering comprehension questions.

For math, we have been working on making 5. I flash 5-frames at the students and they have to quickly catch how many dots are shown. They practiced rebuilding on our own 5-frame with unifix cubes and showing me with their hands.

For handwriting, we practiced letter F and letter E.

I started introducing word wall words. These are words that are most common in reading and writing or they are words that are hard to sound out. This week we learned "can" and "I".

In guidance, we learned all about listening. Eyes watching, ears listening, voices quiet, and bodies calm. We call this whole body listening.

We visited the library for the first time! Each week the students will get to check out 1 book. They should bring it back on Friday's so they are able to check out a new book.

September 3-6

Our first week of Kindergarten is already done!

To start the year, we learned all about recess, the lunchroom, hallway behaviors, how to get on and off the bus safely and much more!

Our poem this week was "Time for School". We sang our poem, made movements to our poem, sorted shapes and beginning sounds, and counted words!

Our read aloud was "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom". We thought the letters should have not gone back up the tree!

We started number corner and each day we work on our number sense.

For word work, we looked at T or not T, T or F, and F or B.

For writing, we worked on some summer books that I will save and give the students on the last day of Kindergarten so they can see how far they've come.

We also had lots of play time so they could meet new friends and play with old ones.
