This week in Kindergarten! 

On Monday, we had "Pete the Cat Day". Please see my post about our special day if you want to know what activities we did and to see some fun pictures. 

Our poem this week was "Sticky Situation". We made movements to our poem, glued our poem into our poetry notebook, completed a poetry page, and recorded our poem for Seesaw.

For center time, we are getting better and better at moving to the different centers and working individually or in a group to complete the activities. We have also started using Lexia Reading during center time. Ask your student about Lexia to hear more information. Here is what our center chart looks like for next week! 

In reading, our read aloud for this week was "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse". We worked on predicting, retelling, studying our main character, making inferences, sharing our favorite part, and answering comprehension questions. 

In writing, we completed our L,U,V,W,X, and Y handwriting pages. Then we drew an animal that started with the same letter and wrote a sentence. They are getting so great at using spaces, lowercase letters, and periods. 

In math, they are continuing to practice showing a certain number of objects with cubes, a 5-frame, and a 10-frame. They are practicing saying "how many more" to a certain number. They are practicing number formation and recognizing numbers. They also started work places this week. Work places are different math centers that your child gets to pick what they want to do and they are free to move from one activity to the next as they please. They are been loving this freedom! We also started Dreambox Learning. If you want to know more about Dreambox, ask your child! Here is our workplace chart. 

On Friday, we had our first guidance lesson. We learned how to be great listeners and learners. 

         

September 13-17

This week in Kindergarten! 

This week in Kindergarten we had a new poem every day. Each day we learned a new nursery rhyme, glued the nursery rhyme into our poetry notebooks, and colored a nursery rhyme book. The kids especially loved the songs and videos that went along with the nursery rhyme. We learned Humpty Dumpty, Hey Diddle Diddle, Baa Baa Black Sheep, Little Bo Peep, and Little Miss Muffet. You might have heard your student sing these all week long! 

During center time, we have been working on completing our word work center each day. This center is on your child's chromebook and posted to their seesaw account when complete. This center will be a daily chromebook center so make sure you're connected to your child's seesaw account so you can see their awesome work! We also worked on moving from one center to the next. Next week we will try three centers. 

In reading, we read Recess Queen. We practiced making predictions, retelling, making inferences, telling our favorite part, and answering comprehension questions. 

In writing, we have been so busy! Your child has already made huge leaps in their writing abilities. On the first day of school, we could only draw a picture together, then we moved to labeling the picture, and now we are writing a sentence with each picture. They are doing such a great job and will soon bring all their beginning writing home- you are going to be so proud of them! 

In math, they are practicing number formations and making 5. They use whiteboards, chalkboards, cubes, and 5 frames to help them practice their math skills.

3. Magic Sunglasses (using 3-D sunglasses to see mystery numbers)

4. Rockin' the Syllables (Strumming a guitar for to match how many syllables we hear in words) 

Welcome to Kindergarten!

 

Welcome to my blog! I am so very excited for the start of the school year. This will be my fourth year teaching Kindergarten at Thorson Elementary School.

I am glad that you found my blog because this blog is very important! I use my blog as a way to communicate easily with each and every one of you. At the end of each week, I will make a post about all the learning and activities that happened as well as some pictures from our week. I will also post reminders, field trip information, and any other information that you may need to know.

I am looking forward to meeting you and all my new students. I am very excited for the school year and all the fun we have planned in Kindergarten. I can't wait to see how your child grows and develops throughout the year.

If you are looking for something to work on with your child before the first day of Kindergarten; here is a video about letters and letter sounds you and your child can practice! This will prepare them for the first day of Kindergarten!

November 9-13

Wow! Was it a crazy week! The students did so great with welcoming back with open arms! They have been so nice and well behaved. 

This week, for read aloud, we read "Wemberly Worried". We practiced predicting, retelling the important parts of our story, studying our main character, connecting to our main character, answering comprehension questions, and telling our favorite part. 

Our poem was called "Out in the Garden". We made movements to our poem, practiced our movements, wrote words that rhyme with rake, and found vowels in our poem. 

Our big book was "Not Quite Right". We enjoyed trying to guess why Carly's playhouse was just not quite right yet. (she was missing her friends). 

For community writing, we thought of ways to make our worries go away just like Wemberly did in "Wemberly Worried". 

For writing, we finished up our writing unit and had an authors celebration where we shared 1 writing piece with the whole class. We have worked so hard on writing. We learned how to tell a true story, what details to add, how to write sentences, and how to edit our writing to get it ready to share. 

For handwriting, we practiced lowercase O and S. 

Our new word wall word was "is". "Is" is a tricky word wall word because it sounds like there should be a Z at the end but it is an S. 

In math we have been practicing counting by 2's. We have also been practicing writing equations.
